Mangaluru: The district administration in association with the Youth Affairs and Sports Department, Indian Sports Authority and Karnataka Sports Authority organized a district-level Dasara and Rajiv Gandhi Khel Abhiyan Womens Sports Meet, at the Mangala Stadium here on September 21.
The sports meet began with an invocation. The sports meet was flagged off with a release of balloons by Lobo along with the other dignitaries.
Addressing the gathering, J R Lobo said that the level of enthusiasm that the athletes show when participating in sports should also be shown in all other aspects of life. “Our country is behind in sports and there is a vast disproportionate amount of athletes and sportsperson when compared to the population. Smaller countries have higher Olympic participants, while there were very few from India who make it to Olympics and other international competitions. This indicates a low quality in sports.” He further said that every academic institution should give equal importance to academics and sports. He wished the gathered sportspersons success in reaching national and international levels.
Assistant manager of Corporation Bank and Javelin thrower, Purandar administered the oath to all the gathered sportspersons.
