Demanding sites for siteless in the Mangaluru City Corporation limits, CPM members staged a protest in front of MLA J R Lobo’s office in Mangaluru on Monday.

The protesters took out a padayatre from Nanthoor Junction to the MLA office and shouted slogans against the Mangaluru City Corporation and MLA for failing to distribute sites.

Briefing reporters, Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Sunil Kumar Bajal said MCC has received over 2,500 applications from siteless individual in the past few years. CPM has been demanding sites and authorities have neglected demand.

During the election, J R Lobo had promised to distribute sites for the siteless and the promises have not been fulfilled so far.

During the 24 hour long satygraha during last April, the Commissioner and MLA had promised to construct flats for the siteless at Kannur, and Kannagudde area.The applications submitted by the siteless should be cleared at the earliest.

Distribution of sites

Reacting to the protest, MLA J R Lobo said that the MCC has received over 1,200 applications from the siteless. The process of distribution of sites will commence shortly. Ashraya samithi meeting was convened recently.

A blue print for G plus two flats with one hall, bedroom,kitchen toilet and bathroom have been prepared to construct on 11 acre government land at Kannur. In the first phase, around 500 families will be selected.

The unit cost of each house would be Rs 4 lakh, of which, Rs 1.20 lakh would be borne by the State government, Rs 20,000 from the MCC. The remaining fund will be in the form of bank loan.
